BIRDS IN THE BORDER
FLIGHT March 2014 – Volume 28 No. 3

Cocos (Keeling) Is. - 4.6.13 - $2 - 50 years of stamps

As well as the $2 stamp showing a Pacific Reef-Heron, there is the representation of a White Tern, Gygis alba, on the 2s6d value of 11 June 1963 (SG6 - part of the country’s first set).

Maldive Islands - 25.9.13 - Birds of the Indian Ocean

The stamp shows a Great White Pelican. In the surrounds, clockwise from top right are:
White-tailed Tropicbird, Phathon lepturus (2);
Masked Booby, Sula dactylatra;
Lesser Frigatebird, Fregata ariel.

Liberia - 30.7.13 - Birds of the world

Sheet 2

The birds flying in the surrounds of this sheet are, I think, Yellow-billed Stork, Mycteria ibis. However, I am not completely sure of this; it may be a species of crane.

Liberia - 30.7.13 - Birds of the world

Sheet 1

I am even less sure of the identity of the fuzzy black bird in the right-hand surrounds of this sheet. I can only suggest that it is a species of starling - or possibly a crow.

Bulgaria - 27.10.13 - Society of Green Balkans - MS

The superb bird image in this MS surrounds is of a Lammergeier, Gypaetus barbatus.

Micronesia - 7.7.13 - Wildlife of Thailand - MS

The bird on the stamp is a Red-breasted Parakeet Psittacula alexandri. Looming over it in the surrounds is a Wrinkled Hornbill, Aceros corrugatus.

Niger - 1.7.13 - Owls and Mushrooms

This is a complicated issue and the images are not of the best quality.

The 2500f souvenir sheet shows an unidentified owl on the stamp. It could be a Short-eared Owl, but is best left as ‘Species of Owl’. A Great Horned Owl, Bubo virginianus appears in the surrounds.

The sheet of 2 at 750f shows another Great Horned Owl in the surrounds.

Of the four miniature sheets at 750f, a Barn Owl, Tyto alba, appears in the surrounds of the top two and the bottom left. There is a Great Horned Owl in the surrounds of the fourth MS.

Peru - 31.10.13 - Hummingbirds of Peru - Sheet of 4

I have not been able to identify the bird in the top surrounds. It may be a sapphire or emerald. Any ideas please?

Falkland Islands - 21.11.13 - Penguins - Sheet of 6

The birds in the sea are Gentoo Penguin, Pygoscelis papua.

Solomon Islands - 10.5.13 - Australian Fauna - Owls

In the left-hand sheet surrounds, clockwise from top left are Barn Owl, Tyto alba, Barking Owl, Ninox connivens and Fearful Owl, Nesasio solomonensis (to be correctly identified in June 2014 FLIGHT). In the right-hand sheet we have (above) Fearful Owl and (below) Barking Owl.

Solomon Islands - 30.8.13 - East Rennell Island - MS

The birds in the surrounds are White Ibis, Eudocimus albus.
